How to reduce stress

Do you know the feeling of waking up in the morning with a knot in your stomach? Maybe a conversation gone wrong from the night before plays on loop in your mind. Maybe a list of things to do winds through your mind like a ball of yarn that keeps unraveling. Then there’s that decision you have been putting off for days now. If you ever feel this way, you are not alone. You are human. Remember, you are not a victim of these feelings. There are steps you can take to live a healthier life.

  • First, rewind to the night before. Think about your nightly habits, or sleep hygiene, as it’s called. The way we go to bed impacts the way we wake up. Consider giving yourself an hour to wind down before bed. Turn off any screens (yes, that includes your phone) and make your bedroom a screen-free zone. Spend a few minutes of the last part of your day cleaning out out your mental basket. All day long you have been accumulating mind clutter. Chances are if you go to bed with a full basket you will wake up with a full basket. Taking 5 minutes to write in a journal, do a relaxation, do some simple stretches, or center in prayer can make a big difference for the morning.

  • Secondly, get moving! How are your exercise habits? Frequent exercise is very effective for improving mood. Just like journaling cleans out our minds, movement has a way of emptying our emotional basket.

  • Thirdly, connect with a friend or family member you trust. There is no substitute for person-to-person interaction. We function best when we get support from others.

  • Fourthly, say “no” to something. Chances are you are over-scheduled and over-committed. You will feel guilty saying “no” and then you will feel liberated. Saying “no” is a good reminder that the world does not revolve around us. As difficult as it is, a simple “no” can be an important step of faith.

Here’s to a healthier, less-stressed you!
